Background

My son Logan is 8 years old. We used to post here a few years back. He has improved dramatically. Many of his issues were resolved with:

  • IVIG
  • tonsilectomy
  • methylation support
  • BH4 - Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) is an essential cofactor during the formation of Nitric Oxide.[1]
  • Yasko
  • probiotics
  • anti-virals,
  • etc.

To make a long story short our 8 year old son also has RTA! We have him on Bicitra and he too has started to gain weight, but what we found most interesting is that he has calmed down quite a bit and is able to better understand social norms etc. So... if you have a metabolic analysis lying around check the CO2.

Renal Tubular Acidosis

Our 22 month old baby was not growing properly (not gaining weight etc.) So, our ped. ran a metabolic analysis. His CO2 levels were low. Apparently this can indicate a kidney disorder. We went to a nephrologist who tested his urine PH . It was high.

The combination of

  • Low CO2 and
  • high urine PH

can signal Renal Tubular Acidosis.

Treatment

He was given Bicitra 4 x daily. Our NT baby has gained about 5 pounds in 2 months since starting this med. His vocabulary has about quadrupled as well.

We never would have known it and thought we had explored EVERYTHING!

Cause

I mentioned this to our DAN! doc and she told me that she sees Low Co2 all of the time and just assumed that a lot of kids are acidotic due to being so sick. My thoughts are that maybe we should question the cause of this.

  • Is kidney malfunction a major issue in autism that no one is talking about?
  • After all, if your kidneys are not working many systems in your bodies will not work.

Medication Cost

  • Bicitra has cost us $5 per month.

Summary

I can hardly believe that after all of the interventions that we have tried that the cheapest one-covered by insurance & MAINSTREAM medicine has been the most beneficial.

I strongly encourage you to look into this as well. It has been amazing for him.[2]
